Built upon the industry’s leading interrogator unit technology, the OptaSense ODH4+ high performance distributed acoustic sensing interrogator unit delivers superior measurements in multiple applications with the flexibility of using high backscatter fiber cables.

The ODH4+ IU provides value to both engineering and geoscience applications which require variable spatial resolution.  Unlike conventional interrogator units , the ODH4+ IU is capable of measuring with ANY fiber from ANY vendor (single mode, multi-mode or enhanced high backscatter) for superior signal-to-noise ratio levels. With the ability to provide variable spatial resolution regardless of the glass present in the cable, operators are no longer limited to a specific fiber dedicated to single measurement, expanding the possibilities for sensing any physical process.

The ODH4+ delivers higher signal-to-noise ration with variable spatial resolution.

Enhanced Sensitivity

When combined with high backscatter fiber, the ODH4+ unit delivers a level of enhanced sensitivity capable of responding to the smaller signals associated to more subtle changes in the reservoir like those associated with the hydraulic fracturing processes.

System Performance

The ODH4+ IU utilizes a key redesign of OptaSense’s leading-edge DAS interrogator unit technology specifically designed to take advantage of the availability of new enhanced fiber-optic technology for specialized applications and signal requirements. The new IU design delivers superior performance, generating cleaner and stronger signals on a variety of fibers.

Improved Features

The ODH-4+ offers several enhancements to our current interrogator unit distributed sensing technology, including more robust laser controls optimizing the highest signal fidelity. With the variety of fiber-optic cables now available in the market, the ODH4+ system provides the flexibility to interrogate various fibers without compromising the measurements and without incurring additional hardware costs specific to these given fibers.

Version 2.9 of DxS Browser Now Available

OptaSense, a QinetiQ company, is excited to announce the release of Version 2.9 of the OptaSense DxS Browser Visualization Software suite. The software allows users to easily integrate large distributed data sets into workflows, including 3D depth, time and measurement data, while managing quality control, analysis and interpretation.

Several major improvements have been incorporated into the version 2.9 release, including:

  • Sparse data set visualization – The DxS charting framework has been upgraded to provide a mode for displaying very sparse datasets, by removing the gaps between data segments and displaying the data on a non-linear time scale.  This enhancement will provide support for analyses of datasets involving looking for long term trends, and easier comparison of datasets captured at widely separate time intervals.  At the same time, the representation of areas on the waterfall where no data is available has been changed to make it more readily distinguishable from areas of low signal.
  • DTS datum trace import and export – the DxS Browser will now allow DTS data datum traces to be shared between projects and datasets for consistent and efficient data analyses.
  • Time-shift capability for imported curves – the DxS Browser now allows users to clean up imported data series (curves) by applying timestamp corrections.
  • Enhanced data tree refresh button operation – the usability of the DxS Browser has been enhanced by allowing the data tree to be refreshed readily when curves have been modified by DxS plugins.
  • Transferable waterfall colour maps – both the colour map, and the colour map limits, can now be copied from one waterfall to another, improving user efficiency when presenting data.
  • Interpolating line plots – the user can now select for interpolation across large gaps when drawing line-plots of sparsely or unevenly sampled data series.

OptaSense, the industry leader in Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) solutions, has integrated the latest high backscatter optical fiber technology with its industry leading DAS interrogators for unparalleled downhole measurement performance.

Combining high backscatter fiber with OptaSense’s DAS interrogator unit delivers the best possible sensitivity, resolution and signal to noise ratio delivering high-fidelity measurements:

  • Enhanced seismic data acquisition
  • Improved production monitoring
  • Increased microseismic event detection and count
  • More sensitive strain measurements for detection of frac hits

The unique high backscatter fiber used by OptaSense provides a continuous amplification of the DAS signal, enabling flexibility in setting measurement parameters in the field, including channel spacing and gauge length.

This flexibility to optimize interrogator parameters to the specific physical processes in the well and reservoir is an important departure from the restrictions that other commercially available enhanced fibers have in terms of pre-set gauge lengths and channel spacing.

Field Demonstration of High Backscatter Optical Fiber

Demonstration of the technology has been conducted in wellbores by comparing the performance of high-backscatter and standard single-mode fibers. This comparison was made with the shortest gauge length typically used in fracture monitoring applications. The enhanced backscatter fiber results in clear seismic signals with reduced background noise and improved signal fidelity.
